Junior Confirmation Ministry 2011 - 12
We are excited as junior confirmation begins again this September. Four years ago year we reformatted the way we do confirmation instruction and it was a blessing. This fall we will continue along that path.
Confirmation ministry at Our Savior places the focus on faith formation with the pastor, parents and the church family. Our goal in confirmation is to effectively teach discipleship and Christianity from the Bible as outlined in Luther’s Small Catechism and to build up fellowship and our connection with each other. Our confirmation ministry calls for parental support, off campus learning, flexible beginning enrollment, prayer, early communion, and servant/worship events.
The purpose of Junior Confirmation with parents and Pastor Rob is to grow by:
· Learning (and reviewing) the basic doctrines of the Christian faith as found in the Scripture and Luther’s Small Catechism
· Talking together about faith issues
· Supporting one another and praying for one another in small groups
· Supporting parents/mentors as they raise Christian teens
· Serving God in the worship service
· Serving our neighbor through special events
Confirmation Ministry Features
Flexible Beginning Enrollment
Our confirmation ministry is a two year program, involving students from ages of 11 to 15 (grades 6,7,8,9). Students may begin at age 11, 12, 13 or 14 (grades 6, 7 or 8) depending on their own spiritual and social readiness, and the decision of parents and pastor. They attend for two years and then are confirmed.
Parents Attend Too!!
Parents and/or family members serve as guides and fellow learners. They participate by attending confirmation instruction on Wednesdays with their child. If parents are unable to attend the class, our first suggestion is to have the child’s sponsor go in their place, or a grandparent, uncle or aunt. Or, pick a “surrogate” spiritual parent from our congregation or someone from your family. Let's learn and grow together!
Early Communion
We can discuss as an option having our second year students receive Communion instruction and begin receiving the Lord's Supper in Holy Week, beginning Sunday, April 1 of 2012 (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday and thereafter).
Confirmation Date for 2012
Confirmation for second year students will take place on Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the 10:45am service.
Servant and Fellowship Events
We are planning some fun servant events and fellowship events once a month. Confirmation will be a “hands on” experience and not just plain old “lecture” by Pastor Rob.
Time Off for Advent and Lenten Worship with Service to the Lord
During the Wednesdays of Advent and Lent, students and parents will take an active part in serving the Lord by attending and participating in worship.
Off Campus Learning and Group Building
Let’s plan to go off campus to learn! Want to go to Camp LuWiSoMo in Wild Rose, WI for a servant/fellowship/learning weekend event or to the Creation Science Museum near Cincinnati, OH in the fall or spring?
Small Groups & Support Groups
In part of our class time together, students will form small groups for learning and prayer with adults and guides. There will be time for parents to meet with Pastor Rob and to support each other as they raise Christian children.
Sermon Reports and Service Credit
26 sermon reports or service credits are required for this year of confirmation. Sermon report forms are available at the back of the church. Credits are also given for serving as an acolyte, usher, playing a musical instrument, singing, or serving in the church nursery. Service forms must be signed by the Elder on the Sunday the service was performed.
Sunday School is a Must
Students are to be in Sunday School each week. Sunday School is from 9:30am to 10:30am on Sunday mornings in the Christian Learning Center. Sunday School begins on Sept 11, 2012.
